Small Dog Houses For Small Canine Friends

August 5th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Smaller dogs are highly popular these days. Almost every female celebrity has one on her arms any given day, and whether it is a Chihuahua, an Australian terrier or an American cocker spaniel, it shares the basic needs of every human on Earth. To cater to their need for a living space of their own, small dog houses are the best option.

Although a larger dog house seems to be good enough for smaller dogs, it is not. Smaller dogs should have smaller houses. It might be comfortable to have all the room needed to move, play and lie around, but the entire structure can prove to be not only intimating but actually scary for these little ones.

Probably the best option in finding a dog house that fits a small dog is to make one. It is actually not a hard thing to do as long as one knows how to drive a nail into a piece of wood, then everything is going to be fine starting there.

To start off, there should be a plan. This incorporates the design for the dog house, which also serves as the basis for other details such as the dimensions of the house and the materials needed to set it up. It is recommended that the dog house‘s base should be off the ground especially in areas where the weather can get really bad.

For the base of the dog house, 4X4s are laid out edgewise to end up with a floor that is around four inches away from the ground. This allows enough airspace beneath the house. A piece of plywood is then laid over the floor of 4X4s.

The house is then framed with the use of 2X2s or 4X4s. To make the roof end up in a sloping form toward the front part of the house, the back wall should be made at least four inches taller than the front wall. This makes it easy for the rain and snow to run off the roof. The entry way should also be framed with 2X2s, and one should make sure that there is ample space between the end of the entry and the back of the dog house for convenient and easy movement of the dog.

Plywood walls are then attached to the outside if the frames and cut the side pieces based on the slope for the house‘s roof. When attaching the plywood to the frame, it is most preferable to use wood screws to secure the walls in place. One can also have some space on the wall for some insulation in colder places.

Its roof is going to be a piece of plywood. For easy cleaning later on, it can be attached with hinges in the back. One can just lift the roof and clean the entire house fast and easy. One can then paint the exposed parts of the roof to protect them from the different elements. A piece of tar paper over the roof can do well in protecting the house and its resident from harsh weather.

Just because one’s dog is small, it can be given any kennel to live in. Small dog houses are best to fully accommodate the needs of these smaller breeds of canine buddies.

Dog House Heater & More to Keep Your Canine Comfortable

August 4th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There is nothing wrong with wanting your dog to stay in their dog house outside, to protect your property and deter trespassers from your home. However in colder months, they may not be able to produce enough body heat to remain comfortable. There are a few steps that any owner can take to make sure your furry family member doesn’t turn into an icicle over night while the rest of your family sleeps: insulating their house, making sure they aren’t lying directly on the cold ground (dog bed or warm blanket providing a house heater for the really cold nights.

Insulating the dog house

There are a number of materials that can be used to insulate your pet’s house. You can line the walls with regular house insulation and cover the insulation with plastic, or plywood. Having a double wall design, with wood shavings in-between the outer and inner wall. Providing a blanket and possibly a dog house heater will provide a triple whammy, but a blanket or bed will be necessary regardless.

Dog blanket or bed

There is no need to put too much thought into this item, especially if the house is insulated with a heater: Anything that is an inch or two thick, that keeps your dog‘s body off the cold ground, or floor of the house will do. Heated dog blankets are also available on the market.

Dog house heater

Prices will range from less than $40 to upwards of $100 or more. Look for a heater that keeps the internal temperature of the house around 40 degrees or so. A heater will be a great treat for your dog and will make the transition from being in their dog house, to taking them inside much easier on their entire body(including internal organs and joints/limbs).

How to Build a Two-Room Dog House

August 3rd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you want to build a warm, dry, outdoor shelter for your dog, a two room dog house is the best thing you can build. In order to build a proper dog house, you will need to get your dog‘s measurements. There are several web sites you can go to for proper measurements or you can do it on your own at home. A good dog house should be large enough for your dog to turn around in, but small enough to keep him warm. Take the length of your dog and add one foot, this is the smallest width your house should be. Then add 1 ½’ to the length of your dog, this is the smallest length of your house. Now, add the height of your dog plus 9 inches, this is the shortest height of your dog house. The door will also be determined by the width and height of your dog. A standard door size is 2′x2′ for a larger dog and 1′x1′ for a smaller dog.

When you are building the two room dog house, you need to make the outer room half as wide as the inner one. The inner room needs to be large enough for your dog to sleep or lie down in without being cramped. Add an extra 6 inches to the length and width measurements of the dog when it is lying curled up.

Construct the base of the dog house out of 2×4 and plywood. The base frame needs to be the same size as the floor and needs to include ventilation holes. The ventilation holes are there to allow moisture to escape from underneath the dog house. Having your dog house built on a base will help to give your dog more insulation as the floor won’t be on the ground and absorb the cold. Having it off the ground also helps to prevent rot. Be sure to place mesh or netting over the holes so rodents and bugs don’t get under the dog house. Once you have constructed your base, you will need to fit the floor to the base. Use weatherproof screws and nails to secure the floor to the base.

Once you have the floor in tact, you will need to attach the frames for the walls. Secure the partition wall to the base and install a plywood panel angled to match the sides. You will then install rigid foam insulation to keep your dog cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Install the insulation in the wall cavities and cover them with plywood. Make sure you completely cover the insulation because your dog could find it and chew on it.

Once all the walls are ready to go and you have checked them for nails and other things that could scratch your dog, you are ready to install the roof. You have two styles of roofs to select from. You can install a roof on hinges so you can easily open it for cleaning, or you can install a traditional A-frame roof that doesn’t open. If you select an A-frame roof, you will need to follow these steps:

The struts, ridge boards, and rafters all need to be cut from 2x4s. A typically roof height is about a 45 degree angle. Center the roof front strut on the top edge of the wall frame and nail it into place from the underside of the frame. Follow the same procedure for the back strut.
Next, you will place the roofing boards. The roofing boards will be attached to the rafters, start by attaching the lowest board first.
Once the roof is in place, it is time to shingle.

iittala Taika 13-Ounce Mug, Blue with Design

August 1st, 2010

iittala Taika 13-Ounce Mug, Blue with Design: Iittala: TAI500506 In 2007, Iittala launched the highly individual Taika 13-ounce mug by Klaus Haapaniemi, an internationally renowned illustrator. Klaus Haapaniemi has a very distinctive style of decoration, and combining this style with the basic values of the Iittala range produces an exciting mix. This 13-ounce mug and the complimentry pieces in this collection, has a fantesy story told on it’s surface, bringing an exciting and colorful presentation to the table! To counterbalance the exuberance of the decoration, the design is translated on a simple shape featuring classic, clean lines. This mug is also availble with a white background. A new design and look for your table – only from iittala. While most iittala dinnerware embraces form over ornamentation, Taika breaks the mold. True, the forms are clean and simple, but the surfaces are wildly decorated with imaginative owls, foxes, and trees in a rich Nordic tradition. Taika means magic in Finnish, and the enchanted forest theme is apt. The designer of these fanciful scenes is Finnish illustrator and artist Klaus Haapaniemi, a rising star in the international design world. Each porcelain mug, bowl, or plate comes in either a white or midnight-blue background, which allows for individualized expression in mixing together or with iittala’s all-white Aika dinnerware.

Made in Finland of durable porcelain, the Taika mug holds up to 13 ounces of tea, coffee, or cocoa, and is safe for microwave heating. Haapaniemi’s red-tailed fox and mysterious owl both adorn the straight, tapered sides of the fully-decorated mug, while the graceful handle and interior remain white even on the blue version. Paired up with Taika 8-1/2-inch plates for cookies or treats, the festive mugs seem to have a special appeal during the holiday season. In addition to microwave-use, all Taika dinnerware is safe for use in the oven, freezer, and dishwasher. –Ann Bieriread more.

Dog House Plans

July 30th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Construction of a dog house can only be undertaken when you have researched dog house plans and settled on one that meets your requirements. It does not pay to plan additions as you go along, instead be very sure from the start what it is that you want and how you are going to go about building it.

Armed with a dog house plan, the next step is to draw up a list of the material and equipment you are going to be using. Divide your list into four parts: structural materials; electrical equipment; decorations and personal items; and tools and construction equipment. Now, based on the design plan, calculate the amount of plywood or cedar wood, insulating material if you are going to put it in, lumber for framing, roof shingles in case you are opting for these, and any other such material that you would be using in erecting the structure. Any wood you buy should be carefully measured and studied to give you the maximum benefit, meaning that you have to use all your ingenuity to use as much of the wood boards as you can, so that there is minimum wastage of material. Plan the areas where you would be cutting out pieces for the walls such that practically every bit of the wood is put to good use.

Tools would include various kinds of saws and drills, hammer, nails and screws, measuring tape and other basic carpentry tools. You would need to be well-supplied with nails and screws, caulking, glue for wood and other such material that could aid you in setting things up. Think it through so you do not have to go rushing at inconvenient times to buy an item you missed out.

Decorations and personal items could include things like the water and food bowls placed in a covered area on the deck, chewy toys, and bones or treats your pet enjoys. In winters you might need to place a woolen blanket for your dog to sit on, so add it to the list. Electrical equipment could range from simple heaters to heated beds and air-conditioners depending on what you think is necessary and affordable.

If you are looking at cutting costs, a good idea would be to try and buy recycled lumber. You can get it a lot cheaper than if you pick it off the market. You can always go browsing with your requirement in mind and buy pieces that would serve your purpose. Beware of buying over and above what you would actually be using – it is tempting to go overboard when you are getting a good bargain! Use a hard wood like cedar for the floor frame. Place the insulation and ply or treated lumber in the frame by cutting it to size for a snug fit. Bolt or nail everything together securely.

Innumerable dog house plans can be found on the Internet. Spend a little time studying these and you are sure to find one which would allow you to build that dream dog house for your much loved pet! Add some personal touch to the structure once it is standing. Place plants, a garden light, perhaps make a stone walkway leading up to the dog house…use your imagination! You can be as fanciful as you like – IT is your creation and it’s for your dog; please yourselves!
